Washington Elementary School students recently had the chance to take part in a first-ever, after-school Junior Tennis Camp. The Camp, led by tennis enthusiast and Washington Junior High School Social Worker Susan Klumpner, met once a week for four weeks and concluded with approximately 26 young participants. The students, ages 10 and under, learned the fundamentals of tennis and also worked on listening skills, teamwork, and cooperation. The youngsters said playing tennis was fun and that they learned more about the sport and also about cooperation. Ms. Klumpner said her hope is to bring the Camp back to Washington School either this winter, in the spring of 2013, or both.
Mr. Aaron Mabra of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) came to Washington’s Junior Tennis Camp on its final day in October. “This is exactly what the USTA was hoping for,” he said, explaining the Camp was a grassroots initiative to which the Tennis Association could provide some support. “We are just trying to support people who are in love with or have a passion for the game.”
